Tamil Nadu has been granted permission to admit 850 students to seven new medical institutions.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu's health minister, Ma Subramanian, announced on Tuesday that the Centre has given the state permission to admit 850 students to undergraduate courses in seven new medical schools this

academic year. This will bring the state's total number of MBBS seats to 4,300.

The Directorate of Medical Education requested approval last year to open 11 new medical colleges, each with 150 MBBS seats. Deans of three colleges in Virudhunagar, Kallakurichi, and Ooty gained clearance on Monday to begin accepting students with 150 students each.

Four other medical colleges – at Namakkal, Tiruvallur, Tirupur, and Ramanathapuram – have each been given permission to admit 100 students.

Subramanian stated that the state would seek authorization for medical colleges in Dindigul, Krishnagiri, Ariyalur, and Nagapattinam after completing the necessary infrastructure.

In addition, the state would ask for 50 additional seats in Namakkal, Tirupur, Tiruvallur, and Ramanathapuram.

"For the upcoming academic year, we are hoping to add 850 more seats. If this occurs, the total number of seats available will increase to 5,200 "he stated
